Angelique Kerber denies Serena Williams to win third Grand Slam

15/07/2018

Angelique Kerber denied Serena Williams a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam victory in the Wimbledon final as she triumphed 6-3 6-3 to win her third.

The German, who won the Australian and US Open titles in 2016, added another to her tally with a convincing victory in the SW19 showpiece.

The 30-year-old looked incredibly confident throughout as she repeatedly thwarted Williams' attempts to seize control of the match.

After taking the opening set 6-3 with the decisive break of serve, she managed to hold the ascendancy from the outset, not allowing the American a way back into the contest.

It was not to be for Williams, who was attempting to draw level with Margaret Court with 24 Grand Slam titles - and the first since she gave birth to her daughter.

"I am just me, and that's all I can be. To all the mums out there, I was playing for you today, and I tried but Angelique played really well, she played out of her mind. I look forward to continuing to be out here and do what I do best.

"She's an incredible person, a really good friend, so I am really happy for her. I know she's going to really enjoy it and enjoy the moment."

But it was all about Kerber as she absorbed everything Williams threw at her and counter-punched in very effective fashion.

Emotional after clinching her third Slam, the German bounded up into the players' box to embrace her family and coaching team.

The world number 10 has endured quite a slump in her career since her famous year in 2016, but hiring Wim Fissette as her new coach in 2017 has made a huge difference. Now she is back among the world's very best.
