Serena Williams beats Julia Goerges to reach final, eyeing eighth title

12/07/2018

Serena Williams stormed past Julia Goerges of Germany with a 6-2 6-4 victory to reach the final as she eyes an eighth title at Wimbledon.

The American, just 10 months after she gave birth, has been incredibly impressive throughout her campaign so far at SW19 and Goerges was simply no match for her.

Seeded 25th, the 36-year-old cruised through the opening set with consummate ease and conceded just two games as the German struggled from the outset.

After the brisk first set, Goerges competed much more effectively in the second until she saw her serve broken once more to give Williams the advantage.

The 13th seed looked out of the contest at 5-3 down but she managed to force a gutsy break of serve with Williams serving for the match.

A jubilant Williams celebrated with relish as she closed out victory with a break of serve to love on the Goerges delivery.

"It's crazy. I don't even know how to feel because I literally didn't think I'd do this well in my fourth tournament back in 16 months," said the American, who won the 2017 Australian Open while in the early stages of her pregnancy.

"When I don't have anything to lose, I can just play so free and that's what I'm doing.

"This is not inevitable for me, I had a really tough delivery and multiple surgeries and almost didn't make it to be honest. I couldn't even walk to my mailbox, so it's definitely not normal for me to be in a Wimbledon final. I'm enjoying every moment."

She will now take on 2016 runner-up Angelique Kerber in the showpiece final on Saturday.

The 2016 Australian and US Open champion earlier beat Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 6-3 in another one-sided semi-final.
