This week we have a whole host of domestic cup action, as the Copa del Rey and Copa Italia take centre stage.
The action begins tonight, as both Madrid sides compete in the first leg of their round of 16 ties in the Copa del Rey. Altetico travel to Girona second tier Girona, in what should be a straightforward task for Diego Simone’s men. Since the beginning of the season, Atletico have only lost 2 matches in all competitions, with the most recent being a defeat away at Dortmund in the Champions League. With that in mind, and considering Girona’s second tier status, you’d expect there to be a few changes from Simone and given the shock results we’ve seen in the FA Cup in England, he may have to be cautious to not make too many changes.
Looking towards the other side of Madrid, and Real play host 4th bottom Leganes. Ordinarily, you’d say this was an easy win for Real, however their form this season has been very inconsistent. It appears the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo is having a significant effect on the whole club and opposing teams now believe they can get something out of the current European Champions. Real lost their last match at home, going down 2-0 to Real Sociedad, whilst having Lucas Vasquez sent off and so they’ll be looking to ensure that they don’t suffer back to back home defeats!
Over in Italy, all of the top sides are in action in the Copa Italia this weekend, in matches that you’d expect them to come through.
