Valentino Rossi claimed a popular first victory of the season at Misano as World Champion Marc Márquez was only 15th after an early crash. Rossi snatched the lead from Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo during the first few laps and resisted pressure from a chasing Márquez, who lost control of his Honda but was able to re-mount. Lorenzo followed Rossi home to give Yamaha its first 1-2 finish since Qatar last year, while Honda's Dani Pedrosa completed the podium position. Lorenzo bolted into the lead at the start from pole position while Rossi eased up the inside of Andrea Iannone into the first corner, allowing Márquez through on the Pramac rider into the next left hander. The top three immediately opened up an advantage, with Márquez and Rossi swapping places several times before the Italian displaced the current champion. Rossi set about team-mate Lorenzo and the pair swapped places several times on lap three, before Rossi emerged in front. As Lorenzo recovered, Márquez pounced to move into second, setting the fastest lap as he did so. Márquez hounded Rossi across the opening stint but made an uncharacteristic error at turn three and lost the front end of his Honda at slow speed. Márquez eventually got going again, but dropped to 20th position and fell out of contention. Márquez's error left Rossi with a 2.5 second lead over Lorenzo and the gap remained stable for the remainder of the race, allowing Rossi to claim his first MotoGP victory in over a year and his first at home since 2009 to send the Italian fans into a state of delirium. Lorenzo was second and suspected choosing a Hard tyre cost him performance, while Pedrosa recovered from a poor start to finish in third. Andrea Dovizioso remained a threat for much of the race but settled for fourth, while Iannone slipped to fifth. Pol Espargaró beat Tech 3 team-mate Bradley Smith to sixth, while Álvaro Bautista took eighth when Cal Crutchlow went wide. Yonny Hernández finished in 10th and Márquez recovered to 15th to take the final point after Aleix Espargaró crashed on the last lap. Márquez now leads Pedrosa in the Championship by 74 points, with Rossi just a solitary point behind Pedrosa following his win.
