Hamilton wins Tuscan Grand Prix which sees two red flags

Lewis Hamilton won a wild Tuscan Grand Prix, a race which featured two red flags at Mugello's first-ever Formula One race.

Hamilton beat Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas out in front, while Red Bull's Alexander Albon finally claimed a podium which had so cruelly eluded him since he joined Red Bull mid-way through 2019.

Albon sealed the podium with a superb overtake on Daniel Ricciardo around the outside of Turn 1 a few laps after the second race restart. After the race, Albon radioed Red Bull and said: "Thanks guys. Thanks for sticking with me."

Ricciardo had been third at the final restart and had told the Renault team "let's finish what we started", but had to settle for fourth position. Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel finished an underwhelming eighth and tenth at the team's 1000th milestone race.

The Mugello race somehow topped last week's Italian Grand Prix for drama, with two stoppages instead of the one mid-way through the Monza event.

Pierre Gasly, a winner at that race seven days ago, was eliminated on the opening lap after a tangle with Max Verstappen, who had made a slow getaway in the Red Bull. At the Safety Car restart eight laps later, Antonio Giovinazzi and Nicholas Latifi appeared to hit racing speed before the cars in front, triggering a collision which caught out McLaren's Carlos Sainz and Haas' Kevin Magnussen, eliminating all four from the race.

A heavy Lance Stroll crash 15 laps from the finish prompted a second red flag, as the Racing Point car had left significant damage to the tyre barrier on the outside of the circuit.

Throughout it all, the Mercedes drivers controlled the race. Hamilton got ahead of a sluggish Bottas at the first race restart and managed to avoid the same thing happening to him at the second, claiming his 90th career win and moving even closer to a seventh world championship.
