Garcia, Kasatkina cruise through

Home favourite Caroline Garcia got her campaign at Roland Garros off to a fine start with a straight-sets win over Mona Barthel of Germany 6-2, 6-4. One of the longest matches of the round was won by teenage sensation Bianca Andreescu, beating Marie Bouzkova in an entertainingly tight encounter that lasted three hours and two minutes, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. The Canadian 22nd seed and her Czech opponent had to return to court after their match was interrupted by bad light on Monday. 21st seed Daria Kasatkina had a first-set wobble – but eventually wrapped up a straight-sets victory over Jasmine Paolini of Italy. Anett Kontaveit, the Estonian 17th seed, stumbled at the first hurdle, losing to Czech Karolina Muchova 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania enjoyed an easy win, beating Lin Zhu 6-1, 6-1. Olympic gold medallist Monica Puig secured her second-round place as she successfully navigated a tricky tie with Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens, 6-1, 7-5.
