Sporting Lisbon win six-goal thriller against Schalke

06/11/2014

Islam Slimani scored for both teams to top and tail a thrilling Champions League clash as Sporting Lisbon beat Schalke 4-2.

Slimani's own goal gave the German visitors an early lead but goals from Mouhamadou-Naby Sarr, Jefferson and Nani turned the match around.

Denis Aogo got one back for Schalke but Slimani atoned for his earlier error by slotting in a late goal to confirm the win.

Schalke took the lead in the 17th minute when Aogo sent a long searching free-kick into the area and Eric Choupo-Moting's header took a deflection off Slimani to take it into the net.

It was almost a carbon copy when Sporting drew level nine minutes later as William Carvalho sent in a free-kick from a similar angle. Sarr's touch was less pronounced than Slimani's for the opener but was just enough to keep Ralf Fahrmann guessing long enough.

Fahrmann was alive to the danger in the 37th minute though, making himself big to block Joao Mario's close-range effort.

But Sporting completed the turnaround seven minutes into the second half with rasping shot from Jefferson -- shooting early from a position in the left channel and catching everyone by surprise as the ball fizzed through to find the bottom corner of the net.

Schalke appealed in vain for a penalty when Max Meyer tumbled under the challenge of Sarr but it looked soft and, what is more, the contact began outside the area. The referee waved the claims away.

They had another scare moments later when goalkeeper Rui Patricio had to be alive to pick the ball off the toes of Kaan Ayhan yards from goal.

Having survived these dangers, Sporting struck back decisively as Andre Carrillo surged to the byline and then poked a ball through for the unmarked Nani to tap in at the far post.

Schalke were not done yet, and got a late goal back when Aogo burst into the box, neatly taking a bouncing ball and firing a half-volley high into the net.

However, Slimani spared Sporting a nervy finish, making up for his early own goal with a side-footed finish.
