Monaco's struggles continue with home loss to Angers

The French giants have now won just once in their first eight matches of the new season.

Monaco's poor start to the new season worsened after Angers battled to a 1-0 win at Stade Louis II.

Stephane Bahoken's first-half strike proved enough to settle a largely scrappy Ligue 1 encounter and continue the pressure on Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim.

The French giants have now won just once in their first eight matches of the new season after failing to produce the required response following Friday's 1-1 home draw with Nimes and a Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid.

Jardim's men finished second last season, but so far have failed to build any momentum.

Angers, who ground out a goalless draw with Toulouse on Saturday, started brightly as Bahoken headed wide.

The visitors continued to press as Flavien Tait and Cheikh N'Doye both put good chances off target before goalkeeper Diego Benaglio saved Baptiste Santamaria's long-range shot.

Cameroon frontman Bahoken finally broke the deadlock on 27 minutes.

Angers got clear down the left through Tait before he clipped a pass back into the penalty area.

Bahoken showed good close control to dig the ball out and fire a shot over Benaglio into the roof of the net.

Monaco failed to haul themselves back into the match before half-time, as Samuel Grandsir fired over from close range.

Jardim sent on Pietro Pellegri for Nacer Chadli at the start of the second half.

On 56 minutes, Youri Tielemans floated the ball across the face of the Angers goal, but Radamel Falcao could not stretch enough to divert his shot the right side of the far post.

Just after the hour, Angers defender Abdoulaye Bamba made a saving tackle on Falcao as he shaped to shoot from 15 yards.

Angers then had to endure some late tension as, with seven minutes left, a cross into a crowded penalty area looked to have been handled by Vincent Manceau and the Video Assistant Referee was called into action.

However, following a lengthy on-field review, referee Willy Delajod turned down the appeals as the visitors closed out a hard-earned victory.
