Hyeon Chung storms into semi-finals after brushing Tennys Sandgren aside

23/01/2018

Unseeded Korean Hyeon Chung charged into the Australian Open semi-finals after dismissing Tennys Sandgren with a straight-sets 6-4 7-6(5) 6-3 victory on Wednesday.

The conqueror of Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev proved too strong for Sandgren, who had himself knocked out Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem en route to the last eight, winning the encounter after two hours and 28 minutes on the Rod Laver Arena.

Up next for the 21-year-old in his first Grand Slam semi-final will be either favourite Roger Federer or 19th seed Tomas Berdych, who are in action on Eurosport 1 from 8.30am GMT.

An evacuation warning brought a minor delay to the quarter-final encounter, with the duo getting under way five minutes later than scheduled once it had proved to be a false alarm, and the supporters had returned to their seats.

And alarm bells were soon ringing for Sandgren in the opening set, with the American dropping serve in the third game as Chung converted his second break-point opportunity.

Sandgren threatened to break back immediately, but Chung dug deep to save two break points before squandering three of his own in the following game.

Chung remained comfortable on serve and closed out the first set in 37 minutes before breaking Sandgren straight away in the second.

However, momentum swung Sandgren’s way when the world number 97 breaking twice, although he failed to serve out for the set at 5-3 as Chung hit back.

Last year’s NextGen champion went on to win the tie-break 7-5, while be took control in the third set when stealing serve in the fourth game.

"In the last game at 40-0 up I was thinking about what to do in the ceremony!" Chung admitted. "After the deuce and break point, I was like, 'No, keep focused'."
