Alexander Zverev warms up for French Open in style by crushing Dominic Thiem in Madrid final

13/05/2018

Alexander Zverev continued his preparation for the French Open in style with a 6-4, 6-4 straight sets victory over Dominic Thiem.

Zverev, 21, got off to a blistering start as he broke Thiem in the first game of the match.

And the German saw out the game from that moment on as both players served out, with Zverev in particular using his big serve to his advantage.

Thiem took a while to get going but he fought harder in the second set, despite being broke in the opening game for the second set in a row.

However he couldn't punish Zverev at crucial moments as his opponent kept relying on his serve and maintaining his record of going through the entire tournament without being broken.

Greater tests will come for Zverev, particularly the next time he faces Rafa Nadal on clay, but he will take heart from how he saw off the Spaniard's conqueror.

With Theim having ended Nadal's incredible run of consecutive sets won on clay attention will turn to Zverev who has now won 18 sets in row on the surface.

He now becomes just the fifth active player to have three or more Masters 1000 titles along with the 'Big Four' of Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Nadal.
