To say that 2018/19 was another dramatic soccer season in Germany is an understatement. While the Bundesliga saw much relegation drama at the bottom of the table, it was the battle at the top that proved most engrossing. While Bayern Munich eventually triumphed by a few points, they were pushed all the way by a top-class Borussia Dortmund side. With many German football fans looking to next season already, the question that many are asking is whether Dortmund can go one better next time around.
Looking at NJ sports betting sites, the first thing that springs out is the odds given to Dortmund. At 13/2 with many, they are obviously fancied to have a chance again. However, old enemies Bayern sit above them in the betting at around 1/3, which slightly dampens down that fire. What this does show is how close both teams are and what a tight contest the Bundesliga could be in 2019/20.
If Dortmund are to topple Bayern next season though, how do they go about it?
Hang onto their best players
In 2018/19, some top players burst onto the scene for Dortmund. These included stars such as Jadon Sancho and Manuel Akanji, who performed brilliantly all year for them. The key thing for everyone at BVB is to hang onto these star players to help them go one better next season. This may be hard where loans are at play, but they must do all they can to make it happen. If they lose the players who pushed them to new heights last year, then it could be hard to grab the title in 2019/20.
Integrate new players into the team
Already, Dortmund have been busy in the transfer market, with Thorgan Hazard, Julian Brandt and Nico Schulz arriving. All these are highly talented individuals, but they must be integrated with last year’s squad to help Dortmund go one better. If the old and new players do not gel, then the spirit that saw them do so well last time around could be in question. If the manager gets it right though, then it could provide the extra quality needed to see off Bayern finally.
Hold their nerve
In some ways, BVB fans were so disappointed at the end of last season as they effectively gifted the title to Bayern. At one point, Lucien Favre’s men were seven points clear of Bayern at the top of the table. This slowly ebbed away though as Bayern embarked on a fine winning run to close the year, while Dortmund stumbled a little. To clinch the title next year, Dortmund must show more bottle and character to hang on when top of the table.
2019/20 could be their year
If Borussia Dortmund can do the above and play to their full potential, then they have a great chance of winning the Bundesliga next season. Of course, it will also depend on what Bayern do to strengthen and come again over the summer. Whatever happens, this promises to be a huge battle again and one to keep all soccer fans entertained.
