Bayern Munich suffered their biggest scare of the Bundesliga season so far, but nevertheless managed to extend their unbeaten record with a come from behind 2-1 win at Mainz. Elkin Soto gave the hosts the lead in the 21st minute, but Bastian Schweinsteiger quickly levelled proceedings. Mainz continued to create chances, however, and could consider themselves unfortunate not to become the first side to beat Bayern this season with Manuel Neuer forced to make several excellent stops to deny them. Arjen Robben then struck a killer blow in the last minute to earn Bayern all three points and extend their lead at the top of the table to 14 points. It soon became clear that Mainz fancied their chances when Pablo De Blasis headed in from five yards, but the offside flag was raised. The flag went up at the other end, too, long before Robben rounded Loris Karius and put the ball in the back of the net, although that decision looked a lot tighter. Soon after, Mainz took the lead with Soto reaching a dangerous low ball beyond Neuer's far post and, at full stretch, he managed to guide the ball between the Bayern and Germany goalkeeper's legs and in. Mainz's joy was short lived with Schweinsteiger's free-kick curling in off the inside of the left-hand post, Karius just managing to get his fingertips to the ball but failing to keep it out. Mainz could and perhaps should still have led at half-time, however, when Yunus Malli was put clean through on goal, but his attempt to lob Neuer turned into a tame pass into the keeper's arms. Malli was again sent clear early in the second half, and he made a better attempt of scoring with Neuer this time forced to pull off a top-drawer save to deny him. The hosts did not try to compete with their guests in the possession stakes, but were nevertheless very effective whenever they did pick up the ball, creating the better chances to win the game. It was not enough, though, and with arguably their first mistake of the game, they fell behind. Robben found the first space of the night inside the Mainz area to turn a Juan Bernat cross in after Thomas Muller had failed to make contact, clinching all three points for Bayern and extending Mainz's winless run to nine games.
