St Etienne beat Bordeaux
Francis Gillot's reign as Bordeaux coach got off to a losing start this evening as Les Girondins went down at home to St Etienne in their Ligue 1 opener.

The 2009 champions were on the back foot early on and were 2-0 down at half-time thanks to Michael Ciani's own goal and a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang strike.

Jussie halved the deficit from the penalty spot 11 minutes after the interval but Bordeaux could not force an equaliser.

Gillot had expressed optimism that the new season would herald a new start for his club, who dropped 22 points on home turf last term en route to a seventh-placed finish.

But they could hardly have got off to a worse start as Bakary Sako got the better of Mathieu Chalme and sent in a dangerous cross which Ciani could only divert into his own net in the 18th minute.

Ciani nearly bagged an unwanted double eight minutes later when he found himself in the way of a Sako cross intended for Gonzalo Bergessio, but this time the ball found its way to safety.

Keen to make amends for his unfortunate opener, Ciani almost scored at the right end in the 28th minute when he got on the end of a Jaroslav Plasil free-kick, but St Etienne goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier pulled off an excellent reflex save.

The second goal arrived soon after back at the other end when the ball fell to Aubameyang, who fired into the top-left corner past a stunned Cedric Carrasso.

Les Verts could have further extended their advantage in the 33rd minute when Bergessio's volley from Florent Sinama Pongolle's cross beat Carrasso, but the busy Ciani was in the right place to clear.

The hosts were handed a lifeline early in the second half when the referee pointed to the spot following a bad challenge by Sylvain Marchal on Anthony Modeste, and Jussie sent Ruffier the wrong way to reduce the arrears.

Buoyed by the goal, Bordeaux pushed forward in search of the leveller - only to find Ruffier in fine form.

The St Etienne stopper made a fine save to keep out a Chalme effort following good link-up play with Jussie, and then got his body in the way of a Modeste blast.

Not to be outdone, Carrasso was forced to make a full-stretch save to keep out Marchal's attempt from Aubameyang's corner at the other end as the visitors looked for a third goal to make sure of the points.

There was one last chance for Bordeaux, substitute Cheick Diabate's fierce left-footed shot skimming the bar, but it was not to be.
