Venus Williams became the latest seed to be struck down at Wimbledon as Kiki Bertens outlasted her in their third round match.
The five-time champion clawed her way back via a second set tie-break, but could not see it over the line as she fell 6-2 6-7(5) 8-6.
Just two of the top 10 seeds are left in the draw following the ninth seeds’ exit: Simona Halep and Karolina Pliskova.
Bertens appeared to be cruising to a comfortable win after charging through the first set and earning a break in the second.
But the Dutchwoman crumbled near the finish line, surrendering a break when serving for the match and losing the resulting tie-break.
The momentum shifted to Williams, who immediately broke in the decider, but she could not maintain her advantage as Bertens soon levelled and stayed calm to book a belated victory.
