Nadal plays down Wimbledon hopes

Fresh from winning the French Open for a record 10th time, Rafael Nadal has played down his chances of success at Wimbledon.

The Spaniard beat Stan Wawrinka in Paris on Sunday to make history and move second, behind Roger Federer in the list of all-time Grand Slam winners.

He has twice before achieved a French Open/Wimbledon double but says that managing that feat again this year might be beyond him.

He said: "Since I have had problems with my knee, since 2012, playing on grass has been very complicated for me.

"We'll see how my knee behaves. Playing on grass is very special. You need to play at a lower level. The body posture is down. You have less stability.

"But keep in mind I played five finals in Wimbledon. I like playing on grass. On grass, anything can happen. I'm motivated."

His French Open success only emphasises Nadal's return to the top of the men's game after an extended spell in which he dropped down the rankings.

At the start of this year he reached the final of the Australian Open and, in the lead up to the French Open, won the Monte Carlo Masters, the Barcelona Open and the Madrid Open, all on clay.

Whether he can be as successful on grass is another question but he will try and before Wimbledon, will be among a strong field taking part at this year's Queen's Club.

Even if winning Wimbledon may be beyond him, he will aim, at least, to improve on his recent record there. Since reaching the 2011 final, when he lost to Novak Djokovic, Nadal has failed to reach the quarter-finals though he did not take part last year because of a wrist injury.

Nadal is 6/1 to win this year, Djokovic is 9/2 while defending champion Andy Murray is priced at 11/4.
