Kerber into third round at Wimbledon after win against Flipkens

Angelique Kerber dug deep to beat Kirsten Flipkens 7-5 7-5 to make round three at Wimbledon.

Kerber, who is aiming to better last year’s appearance in the final, was on the back foot for much of the match but claimed the crucial breaks at the crucial times to secure passage to round three.

Flipkens, who made the semi-final at Wimbledon in 2013, troubled the world number one with her backhand slice throughout but came up short when it mattered, with a big miss on an overhead setting up match point for Kerber.

Alison Riske delivered an inspired performance to knock out 12th-seed Kristina Mladenovic in the second round of Wimbledon.

The 27-year-old American is a well-known fan of grass courts, having recorded the first 13 wins of her career on the surface, and delivered a performance on Court 18 that far exceeded her 48th-in-the-world ranking.

A one-sided first set didn’t bode well for Riske, but she hit her straps early in the second and held her nerve to wrap up a 2-6 6-4 6-4 win.

Fellow American CoCo Vandeweghe awaits in the third round after easing to a straight sets win over Tatjana Maria.

Elsewhere Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova followed up a first-set bagel with a more hard earned 7-5 second set win to dispatch compatriot Ekaterina Makarova.

Garbine Muguruza continued her impressive run of form with a comfortable 6-2 6-4 win over Yanina Wickmayer to seal a spot in the tird round, while Agnieska Radwanska recovered from dropping the first set to beat American Christina McHale 5-6 7-6 6-3.

Polona Hercog was given a scare by Varvara Lepchenko, but ran out as a 6-7 6-2 6-2 winner, while there was disappointment for Bethanie Mattek-Sands as she was taken to hospital following a nasty-looking knee injury, withdrawing midway through her match with Sorana Cirstea.

And Karolina Pliskoba was the big shock of the day, with the third seed suffering a 3-6 7-5 2-6 defeat to Magdalena Rybarikova.
