Juan Martin del Potro falls short in bid for London with John Isner defeat

04/11/2017

Juan Martin del Potro will not be at the ATP Finals in London after he was knocked out of the Paris Masters in the quarter-finals by John Isner 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.

After an incredible resurgence in the latter part of the year, which was kick-started with his sensational fun to the final of the US Open, Del Potro had put himself in with a slight chance of making the ATP Finals.

With some of the biggest names in tennis having to pull out with injury a complicated set of rules and points came down to Del Potro having to beat Isner to keep alive his hopes.

However he succumbed in three sets despite putting up a massive fight in the second to level the match.

There is a chance that he could go as a reserve if Rafael Nadal's knee injury keeps him out of the event and even then it would depend on who wins in Paris.

However he has made it clear that he would not do that, saying after the match that he's going to go home now and rest.

As for Isner it puts him into the semi-finals where he will face qualifier Filip Krajinovic, who is competing in his first ATP World Tour semi-final match.

Should Isner win in Paris then he will earn a place in the Finals.

Pablo Carreno Busta currently holds the final place but will be overtaken by either Isner or Jack Sock should either win in Paris.
