Dominic Thiem saves match point in win over Andrey Rublev, Kyle Edmund crashes out

Fifth seed Dominic Thiem saved a match point in completing a 5-7 7-5 7-5 win over Andrey Rublev in the Monte-Carlo Masters second round on Tuesday.

Thiem trailed 4-1 in the third set before watching 20-year-old Rublev win four straight games to lead 5-4 and 40-30 in the tenth game holding serve.

The world number 33 walloped a forehand long going for the winner as Thiem broke back before breaking again to 15 in the 12th game of the set to progress in two hours and 40 minutes.

The Austrian - returning after a five-week absence due to an ankle injury - will face ninth seed Novak Djokovic or Borna Coric for a quarter-final berth.

Gilles Simon was a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 winner over number 16 seed Adrian Mannarino.

There were also victories for Roberto Bautista Agut, Kei Nishikori (who defeated Tomas Berdych), Milos Raonic and Fabio Fognini.

However there was bad news for Kyle Edmund as he was knocked out by Andreas Seppi 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in the opening round.

Edmund, who reached his first ATP final recently in Morocco, lost the first set 6-3 but battled back to take the second 7-5.

But he couldn't capitalise on that and the Italian progressed to the next round.

Fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov survived a scare against Pierre-Hugues Herbert before holding his nerve to win 3-6 6-2 6-4 in the second round.

Dimitrov was far from his best in the first set, dropping his serve twice against French qualifier Herbert.

The 26-year-old Bulgarian rallied back in the second set with consecutive breaks before serving out to love.

Dimitrov secured a crucial break in the fifth game of the decider and went on seal a third round spot with a powerful forehand, which world number 82 Herbert returned long.
