Dominic Thiem edges Pablo Carreno Busta to get first win in London

Dominic Thiem defeated Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3 3-6 6-4 on Wednesday to get his first win at the ATP World Tour Finals.

After a fairly controlled opening four games from the pair, it was Thiem who struck first as he broke in the fifth.

And Thiem consolidated that advantage by holding and soon broke for a second time to take the set.

However, as impressive as Thiem was in his 31-minute opening set, he still managed to implode in the second.

This time it was the Spaniard who broke twice as he capitalised on Thiem’s errors to force a decider.

However, Thiem responded in perfect fashion as he broke in the first game of the third set, only for Carreno Busta to turn the match on its head again when he broke to draw level at 3-3.

But Thiem bounced back, breaking again before holding to take the set in a tense end to a tight match.

The win gets Thiem's quest to reach the next round back on track and he will face David Goffin on Friday for a right to face Roger Federer in the semi-finals. Carreno Busta, a replacement for injured world number one Rafael Nadal, is eliminated.
