Venus Williams overcomes Viktoria Kuzmova in three sets

Venus Williams drew on all her experience as she beat Viktoria Kuzmova 6-3 3-6 6-2 to progress to the second round of the US Open.

With Williams a set and a break up inside 45 minutes, it looked like the 37-year-old was set for serene progress to the second round.

However, her 19-year-old opponent dug in and managed to secure a double break and send it to a decider.

Ultimately, the 2015 US Open Junior champion’s high unforced error count – 42 to 28 – cost her in the third and Williams took it 6-2 to make the second round for a 19th successive year.

"I didn't do a lot wrong, she just stepped it up," Williams said courtside after the match.

Williams, a two-time winner at Flushing Meadows, can become world number one should she win but is focusing on one mach at a time.

"I just want to win, and if you win you get the ranking. Winning is all I want to do," added Williams.
