Sven Ulreich save sees Bayern Munich past RB Leipzig in penalty shootout

Bayern Munich needed penalties to see off RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal second round on Wednesday after the match finished 1-1 after 120 minutes of regular and extra time.

Sven Ulreich saved Timo Werner's fifth and final spot kick for Leipzig after Bayern had converted all five of theirs to send the Bavarians through to the third round.

Before a goal was even scored, Naby Keita was sent off early in the second half after picking up his second yellow card, leaving the hosts to finish the match with 10 men.

But the setback didn't keep Leipzig from scoring first, with Emil Forsberg converting a 68th minute spot kick after Jerome Boateng fouled Yussuf Poulsen in the penalty area.

Bayern struck back five minutes later though, with Boateng making amends by picking out Thiago with a deft chip that the Spaniard headed home to make it 1-1.

Both sides had chances throughout the added 30 minutes, but no goals came and the contest was decided from the spot.

The result gives manager Jupp Heynckes, who is managing Bayern on an interim basis after Carlo Ancelotti was let go, his first Pokal win since returning to manage the team.

Both Cologne and Werder Bremen, winless in the Bundesliga, briefly forgot about league troubles with victories to progress to the third round.

Cologne enjoyed a 3-1 win at Hertha Berlin, while Bremen edged visiting Hoffenheim 1-0 thanks to Ishak Belfodil's first-half strike.

Cologne scored as many goals through Simon Zoller, Dominic Maroh and Christian Clemens at Berlin's Olympiastadion as they had in their entire league campaign to date.

Cologne, who parted company with Joerg Schmadtke as managing director on Monday, are bottom of the Bundesliga with seven defeats and two draws in nine games. They are also yet to win in the Europa League.

Wolfsburg defeated Hannover 1-0 at home to give Martin Schmidt his first win as coach after five draws in the league, and

Stuttgart won 3-1 at second-division Kaiserslautern, and second-division Nuremberg won 3-2 at third-tier side Osnabruck.

Freiburg defeated second-division Dynamo Dresden 3-1 at home, while Heidenheim eased to a 5-2 victory at second-division rival Jahn Regensburg.
