Schalke battle back to hold Borussia Dortmund in derby

Academy graduate Thilo Kehrer earned Schalke a share of the spoils from the 150th Revierderby as Borussia Dortmund were held to a 1-1 draw.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's 24th Bundesliga goal of the season put Thomas Tuchel's Champions League hopefuls on the right track after the break at the Veltins-Arena.

But 24 minutes later 20-year-old Kehrer, making only his 11th senior start for the Gelsenkirchen club, ensured honours were even with a near-post finish to open his account in blue.

Dortmund's extremely faint hopes of catching league leaders Bayern Munich are all but extinguished after the reigning champions hammered Augsburg 6-0 to leave BVB 18 points off the pace in fourth.

Schalke, meanwhile, are unbeaten in three after recovering from a dreadful mid-season slump.

At the start of a drab first half on Saturday afternoon Kehrer kicked off Schalke's challenge by cutting inside from the left and launching a right-footed effort wide from distance.

Ousmane Dembele went closer at the other end, the French teenager whipping the ball over the bar.

Dortmund just about edged the first 45 minutes and Aubameyang might have confirmed that dominance with an opening goal when he burst through, only to shoot straight at Ralf Fahrmann.

The visitors carried their momentum over the interval and within eight minutes of the restart they had the lead.

Former Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa got into a good position on the left of the box and, after drawing Fahrmann off his line, he unselfishly passed for Aubameyang to slot home.

Schalke captain Benedikt Howedes might have levelled when he got his head to a corner, but Roman Burki pulled off a fine save to keep him out.

The Germany centre-back then raced back to deny what looked a certain second from Aubameyang.

Dembele clattered a post before recovering the ball to ping it back into the danger zone with a classy rabona cross, but Dortmund could make nothing of it.

Instead, Schalke equalised, Kehrer shooting inside of the near post past Burki's fingertips in the 77th minute.

With time running out, the hosts threw on veteran striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who has scored four goals in this derby, in pursuit of a winner, but he did not get a sniff amid the final exchanges.

Schalke are next in action at Werder Bremen on Tuesday while Dortmund must host Hamburg.
