RB Leipzig beat Mainz to join Bayern Munich at top of Bundesliga

06/11/2016

RB Leipzig joined Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga thanks to a comfortable 3-1 win over Mainz at the Leipzig Arena.

Timo Werner scored either side of an Emil Forsberg strike and the pair could have done far more damage as Ralph Hasenhuttl's men dominated from start to finish.

The only blot on their copybook was a Stefan Bell consolation, but that did not prevent Leipzig from moving onto 24 points from their first 10 games in the Bundesliga, the same number as Bayern, who lead only on goal difference.

Leipzig need just two and a half minutes to take the lead with Werner's shot striking Mainz goalkeeper Jonas Lossl and looping into the goal.

They doubled their lead in the 21st minute with a quick break finished off by Forsberg, who received Werner's pass ahead of his defender, took one touch to settle and another to slide the ball past Lossl.

The speed of Leipzig's breaks appeared to be their strength with Mainz seeing plenty of the ball, only they were not being quite as effective with it as their hosts.

Yunus Malli and Jhon Cordoba both had shots off target or blocked before another break nearly saw the hosts add a third just before half-time.

Werner raced down the right and square for Forsberg, who was disturbed as he was shooting and the ball fell for Naby Keita, whose effort was blocked by Giulio Donati.

Leipzig did get a third just minutes later when Forsberg capitalised on a defensive mix-up between Leon Balogun and Lossl before pulling the ball back for Werner to side-foot in his third of the season.

Donati came to Mainz's rescue again to block another Werner effort just in front of the goal line before Forsberg sent Leipzig's next big chance over the crossbar.

The hosts were dominating, but Bell then scored a consolation out of nothing, sending a header into the far post with a Leipzig defender helping it in.

It proved to be no more than a consolation, though, as Leipzig held on to the three points which take them level with Bayern at the top of the standings, 10 games into their first ever season in the Bundesliga.
