Juventus beat Lazio to win Coppa Italia in quest for Treble

17/05/2017

Goals from Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci secured Juventus their first trophy of a potential Treble haul as Lazio were defeated 2-0 in the Coppa Italia final in Rome.

The Bianconeri need a point from Sunday's Serie A visit of Crotone to win their sixth straight Scudetto and are also preparing for a Champions League final showdown with Real Madrid on June 3.

Boss Massimiliano Allegri might therefore have considered this rearranged match at the Stadio Olimpico a distraction but Juve were at near full-strength and a third-consecutive Coppa crown was decided by two of the Old Lady's star performers.

Try as they might, Lazio could not make an impact but their reward for an impressive run to the final is Europa League football, something their current league position of fourth would also guarantee.

They fired an early warning when Keita Balde Diao cut inside to hit the inside of a post, but Juve responded quickly with Gonzalo Higuain testing Thomas Strakosha's reflexes with a driven effort.

Alves, who scored one goal and set up two more as Juve beat Monaco to reach Cardiff, then extended his hot streak with a close-range finish from Alex Sandro's cross.

As the Bianconeri turned the screw, Paulo Dybala twice went close and Higuain was not far away.

In the 25th minute Bonucci made it 2-0 with Sandro again providing the assist as Juve's classy centre-back touched the ball home.

After the break Juve appeared more concerned with protecting the result and their first piece of silverware, with Dybala and Higuain linking up well but leaving Strakosha unthreatened.

Ciro Immobile dragged an instinctive save out of Neto as Simone Inzaghi reorganised his Biancocelesti team in pursuit of a game-changing goal, but to no avail.

Lazio's wait for a first cup since 2013 continues while Juve look forward to a fortnight in which they might add two more trophies to their well-stocked cabinet.
