Juan Martin del Potro rolls through Benoit Paire to reach second week

07/07/2018

Juan Martin del Potro sailed into the second week at Wimbledon with a straight sets win over Benoit Paire in the third round.

The Argentine fifth seed, chasing a first Grand Slam title since 2009, dropped serve three times but still came through 6-4 7-6(4) 6-3.

Paire, sporting a heavily-bandaged left knee, suffered a heavy fall during the second set, with Del Potro stepping over the net to check on his opponent.

The Frenchman continued bravely, breaking back in the final set, but his challenge soon faded.

Gilles Simon awaits Del Potro in the last 16, while he could face two-time champion Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals.

Del Potro’s best result at SW19 was the semi-finals in 2013.
