Bravo the hero as Chile stun Portugal on penalties to reach final

Chile advanced to the Confederations Cup final with a 3-0 penalty shootout defeat of Portugal in Kazan, Russia on Wednesday.

The reigning Copa America champions saw Claudio Bravo save three consecutive penalties as La Roja overcame last summer's Euro champs to book their first-ever final in the competition, where they will face the winner of Thursday's second semifinal between Germany and Mexico.

After the game finished scoreless from 120 minutes of play, it was the much criticised Manchester City goalkeeper who proved to be the hero, defending attempts from Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho and Nani -- leaving Cristiano Ronaldo on the outs -- to make the difference on the day.

The game began with a flurry of chances in the opening half. Andre Gomes fired a warning shot in just the second minute, forcing a save from Bravo after finding space in the centre of the box.

Ronaldo then flashed a header wide in the fifth minute, before Eduardo Vargas was denied by Rui Patricio a minute later and Andre Silva missed a golden chance after Ronaldo's cross left him with only an on-rushing Bravo to beat in the seventh.

Arturo Vidal should have done better with his header of a Jean Beausejour cross nine minutes after the break, but the Bayern Munich man fired his attempt high from close range.

An Alexis Sanchez bicycle kick forced a fine save from Patricio in the 57th minute, and Ronaldo had an opportunity on the subsequent break, but his left-footed shot from an angle was well-handled by Bravo.

And Ronaldo had another look at goal from a counter-attack in the 72nd minute -- his low shot from outside the box taking a deflection before looping over the crossbar.

The Real Madrid star was first to a Cedric Soares cross in the 85th minute, though he couldn't steer his contested header on target as Chile defenders complained of a foul.

The teams finished regular time without a goal, and Gomes began the opening exchanges of extra time with a skied left-footed shot after a poor Chile clearance of a dangerous cross toward Ronaldo.

And Alexis nearly had the opener in the 95th minute, heading Mauricio Isla's cross from the right inches wide of the far post from close range.

Chile had a penalty shout in the second half of extra time, when substitute Francisco Silva appeared to have his foot stepped on after touching the ball away in the box. But the referee only awarded a goal kick as Chile players protested.

Chile were unlucky not to win the game one minute before the whistle -- Vidal's slicing first-time shot from the top of the box striking the post and bouncing back into play, only for substitute Martin Rodriguez's stabbed rebound attempt to hit the crossbar before Portugal cleared the danger.

The game then ultimately headed to penalties, where Bravo saved Portugal's first three attempts -- Quaresma, Moutinho and Nani -- and conversions from Vidal, Charles Aranguiz and Alexis fired Chile into Sunday's final in Saint Petersburg.
