Ben Yedder double for Sevilla knocks Man United out of UCL

Sevilla are through to the Champions League quarterfinals after beating Manchester United 2-1 in their second leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Substitute Wissam Ben Yedder's rapid-fire double helped Vincenzo Montella's team see off their Premier League rivals after the first leg had finished in a goalless draw in Spain.

Romelu Lukaku pulled one back in the game's closing minutes, but the damage had been done and Sevilla held on for the victory and passage to the last eight.

Jose Mourinho left Paul Pogba on the bench to start the match and picked Marouane Fellaini in the centre of his midfield, marking the first time the Belgium international started for United since November.

The hosts looked lively to start to the match, with Lukaku skying a shot over the bar after some nice interplay with Jesse Lingard and then having another attempt from close range blocked by the Sevilla defence.

United's La Liga foes were fashioning chances at the other end as well, with Joaquin Correa setting up Luis Muriel and Franco Vazquez with good looks at goal inside 15 minutes only for their shots to veer off course.

Muriel had another chance on the counter-attack after 25 minutes, but his low line drive skipped wide of the far post from a Pablo Sarabia pass.

Fellaini was in on goal after a one-two with Alexis Sanchez and his shot stung the hands of Sevilla keeper Sergio Rico, although he might have done better to square to an onrushing Lukaku.

Correa popped up in a dangerous spot in the penalty area to start the second half, but his extra touch allowed a sliding Eric Bailly to sweep the ball from his feet with the referee waving off Sevilla's shouts for a spot kick.

Rico was then called into action again, going low and to his right to tip a Lingard shot wide of the goal when Lukaku picked him out in the box.

The teams both saw golden chances go wayward before the hour mark, Sanchez's shot from 10 yards blocked by the Sevilla defence and Bailly sweeping the ball away at the other end from a charging Muriel.

Pogba, on for Fellaini in the 60th minute, had Old Trafford supporters on their feet as he tried his luck from distance, but his curling, left-footed shot was wide of Rico's goal.

And in less than five minutes, Ben Yedder had his double, dispatching a right-footed shot from a lovely Sarabia through ball that beat David De Gea at the near post and then heading home a Correa cross at the back post that the Spain keeper could only flap wildly at as he tried to keep it out of the net.

Ben Yedder now has eight goals in seven Champions League appearances, trailing only Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 12, for most in the competition.

Lukaku's thunderous 84th-minute volley from a corner kick was merely consolation with the hosts in need of two goals to overturn the tie after Sevilla's pair of away strikes.
